Aug 21st, 2010 - Panama City (HWY 77 Extreme) - South East Airsoft Game Day
Ok guys, I am trying to get an idea who would be able to attend a game at Highway 77 Extreme Paintball so that we can get a headcount and possible sponsor for the game day. Here is what we are planning:
So far we have 9+ different game types. All of them are fast paced, easy to learn, and should challenge all players regardless of loadout or replica. We will be giving 'prizes' (mostly SEA swag items) for the best players and the most sportsmanlike players that we see. We have 3 people that will be acting as game organizers and referees to minimize any downtime. We plan to have quick games followed by even quicker resets at the staging area. Teams will not be set in concrete since each game will allow for a quick team picking if we want to even things out. There will be no charge from SEA, just the field fee for the field itself ($10 thanks to Mack).
JoeSnuffie and I have run quite a few games together and have done this more than once so expect a great game day with a lot of activity. If we get all of the swag in that we have ordered then pretty much everyone will go home with something.
Put simply we will be talking about airsoft in the area and playing a lot of games throughout the day with a lunch break. Please let me know if you would be able to attend. I would like to get all of the players in the panhandle and beyond together for a great game day that is organized and exciting with some new challenges for all to enjoy.
Tentative time 9am - 5pm. Lunch break 1 hour.

sounds like it's going to be pretty nice. Only weird things I see is the 15min or less games. That's crazy short. We are all used to 30-60min games. But willing to try anything once

Re: Aug 21st, 2010 - Panama City (HWY 77 Extreme) - South East Airsoft Game Day
The field at 77 is extremely versatile and since we will be fitting our games in alongside of paintball games we really try not to tie up the field too much longer than they do otherwise we all get stuck on the same fields over and over. Also we are trying to break everyone of the 'play an hour, sit around and chat and be unprepared for an hour, rinse, and repeat’. When half the players are sitting around and fixing their guns or retying their shoes we can take the other half out and play a short game and burn through some rounds and daylight instead of sitting on a bench and waiting for them. If by the time the game is over and everyone makes it back to the staging area (and talking about how fun that last game was they just played while the others sat around) the chairsofters are ready then they can get in on the next game that will stage in 5 minutes.
If we get enough people to take over multiple fields with multiple game types then we will do just that. We will have two separate admins at the very least to make sure we can handle two fields running simultaneously with players.
One thing to note, everyone is really used to respawn games and most of these are NOT respawn. When you are hit you are out. Most of them are objective based and have very quick, yet difficult objectives. I will be printing out game rule/requirements/objective cards to hand out to people to cover the games for the day. The game types will be limited to maximum time limits in order to keep the games flowing and not leave a bunch of people sitting in the staging area after they are hit. We will be bringing all of the props necessary for the games, the only thing we ask everyone to bring is a dead rag for the games that DO allow for respawn or medic. Some games will favor a box mag and a SAW and others will favor a fast runner with a pistol.
We are going to do our best to make sure that everyone has a good time and gets to try out the game types they like the best. We do ask that everyone tries out the games we are bringing along with us at least once before denouncing them as 'bad'/'boring'/'lame'. You may be surprised that you will have a good time!

I see what you are doing and it's cool.
15min elim style games with sharing the field with paintball. I was really hoping there would not be any paintball players and we would actually finally have a airsoft day at that place.
I don't know where the post is but I believe mack tried this same kind of event out there and from what I know it went pretty low in #'s do to the way to fast games and elim style.
I'm going to have to think about this now. I really wasn't planning on playing speed ball..

I am trying to shake a few things up for a few months. Everyone has gotten into something of a rut with the same games, same players, same routines. We are going to speed it up a bit to keep the action moving all day long instead of taking a ton of breaks and only actually playing about 2 hours total.

Re: Aug 21st, 2010 - Panama City (HWY 77 Extreme) - South East Airsoft Game Day
Yeah, the heat can be a killer but the real problem is dehydration. Just like we saw at the FEAR game over the weekend, most people don't know to hydrate all throughout their gaming. We had quite a few heat casualties leave the field because they weren't drinking enough. It got better as the day went on since the ones that didn't drink were out early and the rest of us were drinking gallons of water and Gatorade in between. As much as I liked the CQB battles there, I still gotta say that I prefer the semi-CQB/semi-wooded fields at the Highway 77 location due to there being more than just walking around a corner and shooting into a room. We were able to keep our forces going from 10am through 2am with no issues and only a couple of planned breaks and believe me, it was scorching there. Being in the building almost made it worse since there was no wind to speak of.

Re: Aug 21st, 2010 - Panama City (HWY 77 Extreme) - South East Airsoft Game Day
It looked like everyone was having a lot of fun. Hopefully we can get some good feedback from this game to incorporate into the future games. We may switch themes for next month and do a MilSim day with props and such instead of the RvB games like we ran today, but that depends on feedback!
At my count here were the game types:
3 x Capture the Flag (Single Flag Version)
1 x Traitor
1 x Trophy Hunter
1 x Reinforcements
3 x Down But Not Out
1 x Ammo Burner
1 x Shoot the Captain
2 x Capture the Flag
1 x Alamo
2 x Duel!
1 x Charge of the Light Brigade
1 x King of the Hill
That puts us at a damn record for games for a day as far as I can tell! Once everyone had the concept down for picking teams and getting arm banded it was a breeze. Our average downtime between games was a mere 8 MINUTES! That is amazingly fast considering it was also giving the rules, getting into position, and starting the game. I was surprised that only 20 people came out for the game after the tons of responses I got from people and teams saying that they would be there. Hopefully everyone that did play will spread the word and we can double that number next time.
I want to give a great big THANKS to everyone for playing so hard and enduring the heat and (short lived) rain to make it all day out there. I am pretty sure we converted a couple of people from paintball over as well due to everyones willingness to help the new players out and get them into the sport with open arms. I do hope that everyone enjoys their swag that they were given. Hope to see it in use at the next game.

Re: Aug 21st, 2010 - Panama City (HWY 77 Extreme) - South East Airsoft Game Day
We kept the games as a 20-30 minute max time limit but most of them were accomplished well under that time. Since most games were objective based it was a lot of team work being used to win them without letting the timer run out. Teams were swapped around every 2-3 games so that it was kept as even as we could manage since people were coming and going all day. We had more than 20 people attend but we only had a max of 20 at one time. We used armbands that JoeSnuffie made to distinguish teams. Now that we saw how they worked we will make some changes to them to fit a bit better and allow for some more games to actually make use of them as a holder for 'Trophies'.
I must say that once everyone realized that they were going to be eliminated from a game and not allowed to respawn that they started working as teams and using covering fire, bounding overwatch, and a lot of communication. It really took the attitude of lone wolf play out of the games after the first two were played. Only a couple of games allowed for respawn and after we played them we actually had requests to not play them again and go back to elimination.
The 'Down but not Out' game style was a huge hit, you may want to try it at the next game day. It requires a lot of teamwork and was extremely fun for everyone.
We are looking for feedback to make the game days better for next time. I'll start coming up with some more swag to give away at the next one too. I have some ideas that I will work on until then.
